JMT BACKCOUNTRY KIDS

OBJECTIVE: The Foundation would like every kid
to have a chance to backpack in the JMT backcountry

Our foundation would like to make backpacking something every kid can experience. We are developing a program that brings together students between the ages of 10 and 14 for one or more hiking trips each season. We would like to enlist kids from neighborhoods in the Central Valley and through out the Bay Area who typically wouldn’t have a chance to make these trips. Accompanied by chaperones and a JMT guide, each trip would last 3 to 4 nights on the JMT. The children would have to plan and prepare for their hikes, practice assembling and using backpacking gear, learn to read trail maps and navigate, study and practice “Leave No Trace” principles, and reach a reasonable level of fitness. Stay tuned for further details as this program comes together!
