We encourage and accept your donations in any amount, $10, $20, $50 or more, whatever you can. To anyone who has hiked the John Muir Trail, you have spent several days and as long as several weeks in one of the most beautiful places on earth for the price of a permit and the food you carry. Please consider giving the average price of a hotel room in California, roughly $200/ night. Multiply this by as many nights as you feel were comparable to the days you spent on the JMT. But please give, using one of the options below. A monthly repeating donation sustains our continued operations. Your donation is a small price for the immeasurable pleasure of this wilderness while enabling us to care for the trail for generations to come!

We encourage you to make donations by check through the US mail. Yes, it still works really well! More of the money reaches us for work on the JMT because we avoid transaction charges made by the credit card companies. It is worth the few minutes it will take to address an envelope, write a check, slap a stamp on and drop it in a mail box. And you can practice your handwriting! For donations by check, whether from an individual, corporation or donor-advised fund, please make checks payable to, addressed as follows:

The John Muir Trail Foundation at Earth Island
℅ Earth Island Institute
2120 Avy Avenue
PO Box 7348
Menlo Park, CA 94025

We have designed some really nice gifts for those of you who would like a
memento of the JMT to accompany your donation!

We will need your return address too. Take a look at what we have for you!
(IF you WAIVE the gift, your contribution will be fully deductible and the Foundation can put more of
your money to work caring for the trail.) But the gifts are cool too!

Fill out this form, submit it online and make the corresponding donation. Easy.

FOR THOSE WHO GIVE $50.00;  For those who think they can find a better rate than the average hotel room by booking on a B ’n B website, we concede the point.  But consider this, there are no better scenic lands and views than the ones you enjoyed on the JMT!!  So we will reward your donation of $50.00,  a quarter of the price of an average hotel room, with one of our signature tee shirts  (either L or XL for men;   M or L for women).  Come on….you pay much more for Lululemon or Nike, and we’ll put the proceeds to work on the JMT!  Our shirts are made by Farm Fresh Clothing Company in Sebastopol California.  They are 100% organic cotton that is farmed in California, sewn and printed in California with eco-friendly water-based inks and are soft and comfortable.  You’ll love how they look and feel while knowing they were grown and made by local businesses with concern for the environment.  ONLY WITH YOUR  DONATION OF $50.00

FOR THOSE WHO GIVE $250.00, we will send you a copy of the award-winning photo journal “WALK THE SKY—Following the John Muir Trail”, Photography by John Dittli, Essays by Mark Schlenz.   This is one of the finest photography collections since Ansel Adams 1938 book of the Sierra with a thoroughly researched and finely written essays on its history by author and historian Mark Schlenz. You have seen a dozen of our favorite Dittli Photograph images here on our web site. There are many others of extraordinary beauty, scope and perspective in WALK THE SKY.  The four essays written by Mark Schlenz capture the story of this iconic trail’s exploration and construction, with evocative titles:  “Finding the Trail ”;   “ Dancing the Earth ”;   “Singing the Rivers ”;   and “Walking the Wild ”.   Please consider reaching this mark in your donations, and a copy will be yours to enjoy for many years!
